What is sourdough bread?
In the simplest terms, it is bread made without commercial yeast. A natural sourdough starter is used instead. Think of this like wild yeast. The starter is what makes the bread rise. The sourdough starter is made first and this can take between 5 and 8 days. There are many different ways to make your sourdough starter. People use all different types of fruits, yogurts & other grains like barley.
This is then stored in your fridge and fed weekly for you to use time and time again. Bread made with a sourdough starter has a lot more flavour and complexity than yeasted bread.
